Making of the Stars and Moon Ring

Wedding bells are ringing, and we’re ready to debut our own wedding ring. We’re proud to introduce the first piece in our WED engagement series. It features two Canadian-mined and conflict-free half moon champagne diamonds with a row of graduated pave-set diamonds through the middle all framed in a 14-karat recycled gold band. Since every engagement has a good story, here’s the one behind this particular ring.

It was love at first sight when I found the perfect diamonds for my vision at the Tucson Gem Show. Inspired by their shape and character, I created the setting around them.

After we agreed on a shared vision, Hayden carved the ring out of wax. This is the how a ring starts.

Once the shape is set, it’s sent to the caster where the 14-karat recycled gold was poured to make a band. We’ll call that the third date.

The half moon diamonds are beveled, and that means the center diamonds must be graduated in size. Here, we’re getting ready to set the center stones and that’s what produces an elegant arc. After the stones are all set, the ring is ready to rock! Now it just needs a forever home.

The next step involved lots of conversation with my partner in this endeavor, Hayden. He’s the one who executes on exquisite craftsmanship (read: lots of tiny hand movements!), so we had to make sure we were on the same page.

A Union of Craft and Design

Our first collaboration with Hayden Mayer of HM Jewelry was a complete success!  We designed and crafted an engagement ring for a young couple.  The minimal yet classic ring is a rose cut diamond solitaire with a delicate fishtail pave band.  This recent collaboration has inspired an engagement ring line pairing Colby June’s nature inspired aesthetic with HM Jewelry’s exceptional craftsmanship.  Images below are from the collaborative process between Colby June, Hayden, and our inspiring clients.

Stay Wild

IMG_2922

Colby June is inextricably entwined with nature. The designs you see in my collections are inspired by the tiny details I encounter daily in the Colorado wilderness, from the seedpods on a stalk of grass or the texture of a fallen piece of bark. Because of my intimate and constant dialogue with nature, Earth Day is a holiday I celebrate with passion at Colby June.

I grew up in Aspen so the trees, the mountains, and the sky are in my blood. I can’t imagine a world with out their beauty. The preservation of nature, both the subtle note, like the sticks that scatter my hiking path, and the grand gestures, like a Colorado sunset, is a cause that is near and dear to my heart.

For this reason, Colby June is proud to support the Wilderness Workshop this Earth Day. The Wilderness Workshop works tirelessly to preserve the mountains that I grew up on and that inspire my art. It is my hope that the majestic view which I’ve been blessed to wake up to everyday remains a source of inspiration for generations to come. Wilderness Workshop is determined to make this hope a reality.
